APPEARANCE: Even in Germany, the most remarkable thing that anybody seemed to note about Tenma was the fact that he was...Asian.
This is liable to be even less distinctive out of the country. All that marks Doctor Tenma as the scholarly type is his messy black hair - the waves and stray strands never looking quite groomed, as if he just rolled out of bed - and a lingering, tired look around his eyes. Overall, an ordinary man that some would even go so far as to call good-looking. His style leans more toward the laid-back; apart from the suits and white coat he would wear when working, Tenma rarely gets any more formal than a hooded jacket and the pair of jeans that he probably fell asleep in.
A very expressive person, Tenma’s emotions are almost always visible on his face; he hasn’t quite learned how to mask feelings best left secret.
PERSONALITY: To put it simply, Tenma is a solitary figure.
Despite his cheerful disposition, there’s an inexplicable barrier around the man. Although he exudes an innocent, adorable sort of charm in his words and manner, there are few that can say that they’ve ever been close to him. Tenma is not a team player. Not because he’d do badly in a group - being part of a surgical team is a testament to his skill - but crowds make him feel uncomfortable. He feels at home neither in Germany or Japan, unable to relate to either party. This mentality gives him a great sense of personal responsibility for all his actions and anything that may have been remotely connected to him - he wouldn’t forgive himself if someone died because of him. Moreover, he’d insist that he be the one to rectify matters. He, and he alone.
Introverted by nature, Tenma draws strength from within. He’s a perfect example of a stoic: a man who takes abuse, humiliation, and hardship silently until his sense of personal justice blows over. He understands the value of hard work and diligence, and has a particular admiration for anyone skilled. If they’re better than him, he would be very impressed; Tenma’s very much the type to belittle himself to make others feel good about themself...Whether out of flattery, or simply not realising that his own abilities are extraordinary too.
Above all, Tenma believes in the sanctity of human life. Although a woman once tried to tell him otherwise, the doctor believes that all lives are made equal, and as such, passes no judgement on a person before he gets to know them. With this belief also comes a powerful dislike for killers and their ilk.
His time on the run has given him a healthy sense of paranoia; Tenma is a bit slow to trust others or reveal too much information about himself at first. On the whole, however, he thinks that people have good intentions and wouldn’t step on him for their personal gain. With time, he can be quite open, even affectionate.
